This course is one of the gateway courses that is required and compulsory for admission to The NUS Executive MSc in Management (EMIM).

Overview

Enhance your business acumen and financial analysis skills

This course uses accelerated learning methodology to provide an impactful learning experience. Actual annual reports of public-listed companies, real-life case studies and financial news will be used to provide realistic learning experiences and direct transfer of learning to the workplace. This is a hands-on workshop that focuses on the practical applications of accounting and financial principles in a business environment. Complex technical jargon will be explained in simple layman terms. This workshop will also enhance participants business acumen and financial analysis skills.

Online Session 1: Introduction

  • How do key financial statements inform business decisions?
  • How does financial analysis identify the health and performance of a business?
  • How are investment opportunities evaluated and capital allocation decisions made?
  • How non-finance managers can use financial insights to enhance value and promote growth?
  • What financial risks do businesses face, and how they can be managed?

Online Session 2: Balance Sheet

  • How is a business financed?
  • How is a company’s net worth determined?
  • Is the company at risk of facing bankruptcy?
  • Why is working capital management important?

Online Session 3: Income Statement

  • What are the differences between cash and accrual accounting systems?
  • What are the strengths and limitations of accrual accounting?
  • How are profit margins computed?
  • What is EBITDA?
  • Why profitable companies can still go bankrupt?

Online Session 4: Cash Flow Statement

  • What is the difference between cash balance and cash flow?
  • Is a business’ cash flow sustainable?
  • Where cash might be stuck in a company, and how it can be freed up?
  • What are the differences between sustainable and non-sustainable cash flow patterns?
  • What is the impact of changes in working capital on cash flow?

Online Session 5: Budgeting

  • What is the role of budgeting and forecasting in managing a business effectively?
  • How is a budget developed?
  • How does the financial perspective integrate with other business functions like marketing, operations and human resources?

Online Session 6: Profitability

  • How do changes in volume, cost, and selling price drive profit?
  • How do fixed and variable costs differ in their behaviours, and the impact they have on profitability?
  • What is break-even analysis, and how is it calculated?
  • What is contribution margin analysis, and how is it used to evaluate profitability?
  • What is operating leverage, and how does it affect a company’s profitability?

Online Session 7: Capital Budgeting (Part 1)

  • Why is capital budgeting important?
  • What does capital budgeting involve?
  • What is the time value of money (TVM), and why is it important in financial decision-making?
  • What is the Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC), and how it can be used to assess investment opportunities?

Online Session 8: Capital Budgeting (Part 2)

  • What is Net Present Value (NPV), and how is it calculated?
  • What is the payback method, and how is it used to evaluate investment decisions?
  • What is the Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and how is it calculated for investment projects?
  • How project risk can be assessed effectively?

Online Session 9: Ratio Analysis

  • How key financial ratios can be calculated and interpreted, to assess a company’s financial health and operational efficiency?
  • How the Du Pont Analysis is performed, and what insights are provided about a company’s return on equity?
  • How do financial ratios enable comparisons of a company against its industry peers or standards?
  • How trends in financial ratios over time can be analysed, to identify patterns and potential issues in a company’s financial performance?
